How can AI help move breast cancer screening from a one-size-fits-all approach towards personalized prevention?
In Norway, women aged 50–69 are invited to mammography screening every two years, regardless of their individual risk. Our goal is to use AI to help personalize this approach, enabling women at higher risk to be screened more frequently and those at lower risk potentially less often.
In this seminar, I will present a new AI approach that learns from both previous screenings and different mammographic views to identify patterns associated with future breast cancer risk.
Evaluated on two datasets, the approach shows promising results across women with different breast densities, cancer subtypes, and demographic backgrounds.
By learning from how mammograms change over time, this work takes a step towards more personalised breast cancer screening, with the long-term ambition of matching screening frequency more closely to each woman’s individual risk.
